Welcoming Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan’s announcement to implement the Udaipur Congress plenary decisions in Kerala, State Youth Congress president O.J. Janeesh on Sunday said the party’s commitment to reserve 50 % of seats for youth and women in both organisational and parliamentary structures must now be translated into action.

“This decision has not been fully implemented in many States. The Youth Congress has consistently demanded that it be put into practice in Kerala, especially in local body elections,” he said.

He pointed out that the recent local body polls had already demonstrated the relevance of the decision. “Young candidates have broken the so-called Left fortresses and emerged victorious. That itself validates the Udaipur resolution,” Mr. Janeesh said.

On Mattathur

Responding to the controversy surrounding Mattathur, Mr. Janeesh accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of reacting with undue enthusiasm without even attempting to verify facts. “Whenever there is news of people allegedly moving to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), no one is happier than the Chief Minister—perhaps not even Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” he said. “In the Mattathur issue, the Chief Minister rushed to celebrate without understanding the ground reality.”

Mr. Janeesh categorically denied allegations that Congress members in Mattathur had defected to the BJP or voted for the party. “Not a single Congress member has joined the BJP, nor has any Congress member voted for the BJP. It was BJP members who voted in favour of an Independent candidate supported by the Congress in the president and vice-president elections,” he clarified.

He said disciplinary action was taken against the Congress members only because, in accordance with a KPCC circular, those who accepted positions with the BJP support should resign and they failed to do so at appropriate time.“The party has taken the right action at the right time. There is no basis for other controversies being manufactured around this issue,” he said.

Launching a counter-attack on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], Mr. Janeesh said Kerala had already shown that the BJP can rule even without a single MLA if you vote for the CPI(M). He accused the Chief Minister of hypocrisy, citing instances such as signing the PM SHRI scheme, supporting Labour Codes, and personally calling the BJP’s lone Mayor to offer congratulations. “It is to cover up this embarrassment that the Chief Minister is trying to divert attention by blowing up a local issue and pointing fingers at the Congress,” Mr. Janeesh said.

“The Congress is the only party fighting the Sangh Parivar across the country. If the Chief Minister believes he can weaken that fight by exploiting the alleged immaturity of local leaders, it will boomerang,” he warned.
