Spotify is one of the first music streaming platforms to embrace artificial intelligence. In 2023, the company introduced a new AI powered DJ that creates an ever changing playlist based on an user’s listening habits. Now, the functionality is getting a bunch of enhancements that enhance user experience. Available for Premium users, Spotify says users can personalise DJ playlists by telling it what they want to listen instead of relying on AI.
To do so, simply press and hold the DJ button that appears when using the feature and wait for a beep. Following the audio cue, users can use voice commands like “play me some electronic beats for a midday run” or “surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
Before the update, AI DJ didn’t allow users to control what they wanted to listen and would automatically switch up the song. However, Spotify users now have the ability to ask the DJ to play specific tracks, listen to their favourite artists, genres and switch songs to match their mood.
The company also borrowed the AI playlist building feature, which helps users create playlists using text prompts. For example, Spotify says users can now ask the DJ to play “music to soundtrack my life as a movie.” One thing to note is that the feature is still in beta, so it won’t be able to process non-music related queries, like answer questions about audiobooks or podcasts.
The addition of voice commands to Spotify’s DJ is pretty much the only way you can control the AI powered feature, but it can awkward to use it in an environment where you can’t talk, so hope that the music streaming platform adds an option that lets you control the AI generated playlists using a text prompt.
