Women for Loan Relief, a collective of people affected by the 2024 Wayanad landslides, has submitted a petition to the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, seeking steps to waive loans taken by the affected people.
Around 700 women in the worst-hit areas lost all their life savings and assets following the disaster. They now live in rented houses or with relatives. A total of 47 women from three wards, who were associated with Kudumbashree self-help groups, had died in the incident.
The situation is such that Kudumbashree members have to repay the loans that many of the victims had taken. Although this was taken up at different levels, only a couple of banks are willing to waive the loans. Moreover, banks are now unwilling to give fresh loans, the collective said in a release. They lauded the High Court seeking the Centre’s stand on loan waiver.
