The police have registered cases against nearly 50 Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers in connection with an attack reported at Panoor in Kannur district on Saturday following the local body election results.
The Kulavallur police said the attack was led by Sarath, Ashwanth, Anuvin, Ashik, Sachin, Jeevan, K.K. Shanid,and 40 other identifiable people. Cases have been charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Kerala Police Act, 2011, and 3(1) of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act 1984, arms Act, and the Kerala Prevention of Damage to Private Property and Payment of Compensation Act, 2019. A total of five cases have been registered.
According to the police, the CPI(M) workers unleashed violence in parts of north Kerala soon after the declaration of the election results.
Swords and explosive substances were allegedly used during the attacks. Several United Democratic Front (UDF) workers and candidates sustained injuries in the incidents.
In Panoor, the CPI(M) workers allegedly created a ‘reign of terror’ by parading around with swords and hurling explosives at a UDF victory procession. Miscreants reportedly barged into the houses of the Indian Union Muslim League workers and attacked them. Several UDF workers were injured in a stone pelting incident at Paradu town.
Clashes were also reported at Manippara in Ulikkal between the CPI(M) and the Congress workers. Later, the Congress office at Thuruthmukku in Ermala was attacked allegedly in the presence of police personnel. The CPI(M) workers also targeted Indira Bhavan in Ermala. The hands of an Indira Gandhi statue was damaged during a bomb attack.
In Payyanur, the CPI(M) workers attacked and damaged the Congress office at Theru. The workers entered by breaking open the locked office.
