Kerala University Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal has convened a Syndicate meeting on November 1.
Various issues, including the reinstatement of suspended Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar, are expected to come up for discussion. The meeting comes nearly two months after the Kerala High Court directed the Syndicate to adopt a decision on the issue, while refraining from annulling the suspension. The court had issued the order while considering a petition filed by Dr. Anil Kumar. The Syndicate had last met on September 2.
The Vice-Chancellor recently informed the High Court about the decision to convene the meeting, and added that the proceedings would be recorded using CCTV cameras. Necessary arrangements have already been made for the purpose.
The Registrar was suspended on July 2 following a row over displaying the controversial ‘Bharat Mata’ image during a private function, attended by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, at the university’s Senate Hall. The incident triggered a severe administrative impasse in the university.
Subsequently, while Left-backed Syndicate members passed a resolution to revoke the suspension, the Vice-Chancellor refused to recognise the legitimacy of the decision. For a brief period, the university was caught in a power tussle, with the Registrar continuing to perform his duties while the Vice-Chancellor declined to act on files forwarded by him. The stand-off led to an administrative paralysis, causing a significant backlog of files, including those related to academic and certificate applications.
