The University of Liverpool, established in 1881, has received formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to open its first campus in India. In an announcement today, the University announced that a new campus will be launched in Bengaluru, sometime around July next year. This development supports the Indian government’s initiative to invite leading international universities to establish campuses in the country, aiming to boost the global competitiveness of India’s education sector.
The University of Liverpool’s Indian campus is expected to commence operations by the 2026-2027 academic session. The campus will offer programmes in law, business, and health sciences, aiming to provide Indian students with access to world-class education domestically. This initiative is part of the broader strategy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages foreign universities to establish campuses in India to foster internationalization and improve the quality of higher education.
Other Universities that have got approval from the UGC are the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), Victoria University (Australia), Western Sydney University (Australia), and Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy).
The University of Liverpool already has links with Bengaluru and the wider State of Karnataka, including a research partnership with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences.
Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, said, “We are delighted to have received approval from the University Grants Commission to open Bengaluru’s first international campus. The Indian government’s ambition to significantly increase enrolment in higher education is visionary and we are excited to be developing plans to play our part.
“Opening a campus in the State of Karnataka and Bengaluru feels like the next natural step, building on the fantastic partnerships and collaborations we already enjoy there. We look forward to providing talented students with access to an exceptional learning experience and a range of fantastic opportunities to develop their skills and employability. We are also committed to embedding a strong research culture to the benefit of industry, the region and the wider world.”
Meanwhile, the University of Southampton has also announced the establishment of its campus in India. The campus is set to be located at Gurgaon’s International Tech Park and is scheduled to be initiate its first intake of students starting in August 2025.
