University of Bath confers Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration to Sunil Bharti Mittal

The University of Bath, United Kingdom, awarded Sunil Bharti Mittal, the founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration. The honour was conferred at the University’s summer graduation ceremony held at Bath Abbey, in recognition of Mittal’s contribution to global business, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.

Mittal is a pioneer of the Indian telecommunications revolution and has played a pivotal role in shaping the global communications landscape through Bharti Airtel, one of the world’s leading telecom companies. His leadership across diverse industries, from telecom and digital infrastructure to financial services and space communications, as well as his enduring dedication to ensuring equity in access to education, articulate purpose, innovation, and global ambition.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Phil Taylor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bath, said, “We are proud to honour Sunil Bharti Mittal’s achievements in enterprise, leadership, and service. His work has positively impacted over 3.7 million children, and he sets a powerful example of giving back. We’re delighted to welcome him to our alumni community, alongside his son and daughter, who are Bath graduates.”

On conferment of the Doctorate, Mittal said, “I’m honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Bath, especially given my family’s personal connection. I firmly believe in education’s power to uplift and transform, and remain committed to strengthening India–UK collaboration in both industry and academia.”

The University of Bath is one of the UK’s academic institutions ranked among the top 10 universities in the country and placed within the top 10% globally (QS 2026).

The honour from the University of Bath marks Mittal’s ninth honorary doctorate and his third from a UK institution. He was earlier conferred the Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University of Leeds in 2009 and the Doctor of Civil Law (Honoris Causa) by Newcastle University in 2012.

He has previously served on the governing body of the London Business School and was a member of the Cambridge India Partnership Advisory Board at the University of Cambridge. Mittal continuest to support academic collaboration through his role on the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle of Advisors at the University of Cambridge and as a member of the India Advisory Group at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In India, he has served on the Boards of Governors of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Lucknow, and IIT Bombay. He currently serves as Chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Board at Plaksha University and as a member of the governing board at the Indian School of Business.

Mittal has also contributed to global academic dialogue through his previous roles on the Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard Business School, the Advisory Board of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Global India Council at INSEAD. He is currently a member of the Global Advisory Council, Harvard University.

This recognition from the University of Bath also underscores the growing convergence between India and the UK across enterprise, innovation, and higher education, an official statement issued in this regard said.
