Traffic snarls the norm at Venjaramoodu with flyover work remaining a non-starter

Commuters along the MC Road continue to face difficulties due to long traffic snarl-ups at the Venjaramoodu junction, where the work on the proposed flyover has not begun months after it was inaugurated.

A key junction on the stretch connecting Thiruvananthapuram to nearby districts, Venjaramoodu has become one of the major bottlenecks along the Thiruvananthapuram-Kottarakara-Pathanamthitta route.

Long lines of vehicles

A long line of vehicles are visible daily on either side of the junction at all times of the day. The traffic issues here are compounded by the presence of a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) depot right near the junction. A ₹30.5-crore project meant to decongest the junction consists of a flyover with a width of 10.5 m, 5.5-m-wide service roads and 1.5-m-wide footpaths on either side.

Vamanapuram MLA D.K. Murali said that the delay had been caused due to the issues related to the preparation of estimates for shifting the utility wires, including by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

“There was some delay in preparing the estimates for the shifting of the utility lines. With shops on either side of the stretch and the utility lines passing through one side, the process involves some complications. The KSEB has now prepared an estimate and it has been approved. The Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society Limited, which is implementing the project, will carry out the utility shifting and start the piling work for the flyover immediately,” said Mr. Murali.
