Tourism stakeholders and vendors in Munnar have welcomed the announcement by Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal that the construction of the proposed flyover in the town will be started without delay.
Mr. Balagopal made the announcement during a visit to Munnar on Monday.
According to officials, the State government allocated ₹38 crore for the construction of a flyover at Munnar in the 2016 Budget. But due to various issues, the construction has not yet begun.
Alignment changed
Devikulam MLA A. Raja said that the Finance Minister had promised to accord financial sanction for the project without delay. “Earlier, a single flyover was planned in Munnar. But due to technical difficulties, the alignment of the project was changed twice, and it resulted in the delay. Now the Kerala Road Fund Board is preparing a plan for the flyover project,” said Mr. Raja.
“As per the redesigned project, two flyovers will be constructed in the town. One flyover will connect the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway with the Munnar CSI Church bridge, and the other with the Mattuppetty Road. Once completed, vehicles to other destinations can skip the town,” said Mr. Raja.
Major concern
Welcoming the announcement, G. Sojan, coordinator of My Munnar Movement, said: “hours-long traffic block is a major concern in the Munnar hill station. Flyover is the only way to avoid the traffic blocks in the town. The government should take immediate steps to complete the project.”
According to tourism stakeholders, the hours-long traffic blocks in Munnar during holidays and weekends affect the movement of even emergency vehicles.
