Preventive measures against amoebic meningoencephalitis will be intensified across the district, it was decided at a review meeting chaired by District Collector Arjun Pandian on Saturday.
The meeting resolved to step up chlorination of all drinking water sources throughout September. In addition, bleaching powder and awareness leaflets will be distributed to every household.
Quality check of water
Health awareness sessions will be conducted in schools, focussing on the causes of amoebic meningoencephalitis and the precautions to be observed. Higher secondary schools with water testing labs will also provide facilities for students to bring drinking water from their homes for quality checks.
Local self-government institutions have been instructed to ensure continuous chlorination of swimming pools and public wells. Kerala Water Authority officials must see to it that all storage tanks are disinfected at regular intervals. The Health department and the Pollution Control Board will jointly inspect water quality in theme parks to verify whether chlorination is being done properly.
A district-wide mass chlorination campaign has been scheduled for September 27 and 28. Ahead of this, a meeting of all local body chairpersons will be convened to coordinate the campaign.
