In a move loaded with political ramifications for the Left Democartic Front (LDF) which is in power at the Thrissur Corporation, Mayor M.K. Varghese has said he will not campaign for alliance in the upcoming local body elections.

“I am leaving the chair with complete satisfaction,” Mr. Varghese, who has been in the news for showering praise on Union Minister of State and BJP leader Suresh Gopi, who represents Thrissur in Parliament, told The Hindu. “When I took charge as Mayor, my understanding with the LDF was that I should be allowed to work and think independently. The LDF never interfered in my functioning or criticised me in my projects. In return, I have delivered development worth ₹1,500 crore to the city. It is now the party’s responsibility to communicate these achievements to the people and win the election. I have fulfilled my duty and given the city a corruption-free administration.”

Reflecting on his tenure, he said, “I have worked tirelessly for the past five years. The city has never seen such growth before. Thrissur entered UNESCO’s global network of Learning Cities. The endless achievements include state-of-the-art infrastructure, flawless roads, and a modern waste management system.”

The Mayor added that after stepping down, he would take a three-month break before deciding on his future plans. “I will remain active as a public worker,” he said.

When asked if he would continue his alliance with the LDF, Mr. Varghese replied, “I will cooperate with the political party that suits my ideology. I was elected as an Independent candidate and I will decide whom I should align with.” He also hinted that he will not contest the coming election as the Mayor post is reserved for women this time.

The LDF and the United Democratic Front had won the same number of seats in the last election held in 2020. The LDF came to power with the support of UDF rebel councillor M.K. Varghese, who contested as an Independent candidate.

However, the Mayor’s latest remarks have fuelled fresh speculation about his possible shift to the BJP. Along with announcing his decision to stay away from LDF campaigning, Mr. Varghese strongly criticised former Congress MP T.N. Prathapan and showered praise on Mr. Suresh Gopi.

Mr. Prathapan did not give even a single paisa to the Corporation, he alleged. But Mr. Gopi, as soon as he became MP, contributed ₹1 crore, Mr. Varghese added.

The CPI, a key LDF ally, has previously expressed disapproval of Mr. Varghese’s repeated public support for Mr. Gopi and even demanded that the LDF sever ties with him. However, the CPI(M) reportedly avoided confrontation, aware that the Corporation’s stability depended on Mr. Varghese’s backing.
