In preparation for the monsoon season, a comprehensive dam safety review meeting was convened in Thrissur on Sunday by District Collector Arjun Pandian.
The meeting focussed on assessing the current status of dams in the district and ensuring adherence to the proposed rule curves to mitigate flood risks.
The proposed rule curves are guidelines that specify the optimal water levels to be maintained in reservoirs at different times of the year. These curves are crucial for effective flood risk management, especially in the context of changing rainfall patterns and reservoir capacities.
The Collector stressed the importance of strictly following these rule curves to prevent sudden and unplanned release of water, which could lead to flooding. He also directed that the proposed rule curves be communicated to the district administration and the State Disaster Management Authority for coordinated action.
Peringalkuthu dam
Regarding the Peringalkuthu dam, the Collector instructed that the water level be maintained at 419.4 m, considering the potential for rapid rise in the water level in the Chalakudy river and the risk of inundation in surrounding areas. This level is below the usual alert threshold of 421 m, allowing for controlled water release, if necessary. The current water level is 414.6 m.
The current water level in the Vazhani and Chimmini reservoirs are below the proposed rule curve, according to Irrigation officials.
The Collector asked the officials to assess the potential rise in river levels and the impact on surrounding areas in consultation with relevant departments before releasing water from the dams.
The meeting also addressed the need for real-time monitoring of rainfall and water levels, coordination with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) for dam operations, and ensuring that emergency contact information is readily available to the public.
