Health Minister Veena George has said that the State government is considering a proposal to create the post of a super-speciality cardiologist at the Government District Hospital at Vadakara.
She was at the hospital on Monday (August 11) to open a new operation theatre complex. Ms. George said that discussions to create posts of super-speciality doctors in district hospitals were in their final stages, and that a Cabinet decision was expected soon. The Minister said that around ₹10,000 crore under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) had been spent for the development of government hospitals, apart from the plan fund. K.K. Rema, MLA, and K.K. Rajaram, District Medical Officer, among others, were present. The new operation theatre complex has an advanced modular operation theatre, a general operation theatre, a minor operation theatre, and a 25-bed ward.
Meanwhile, Youth Congress activists waved black flags at the Minister outside the venue in protest against the alleged department action against Harris Chirakkal, Head of the Department of Urology at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, for highlighting the alleged shortcomings in the hospital administration. V.P. Dulkhifil, Kozhikode district panchayat member and Youth Congress State general secretary, led the protest. They also carried a photo of Dr. Harris. The police took them into custody later.
