Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty on Friday said the State could not stick to its opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 forever.
Responding to questions on the contradiction between the government’s stated stance of opposition to the NEP and the clause in the PM SHRI MoU that States will implement all the provisions of the NEP in its entirety, the Minister said the education system was changing the world over. “Kerala cannot stay away from these changes. Policies have evolved since the formation of the State. We cannot hold on to the same policy throughout. However, it did not mean that the State had changed its stance on the NEP in its entirety.”
About the opposition to PM SHRI till now, the Minister conceded that the government had some apprehensions about the NEP. Discussions were held with the Union government regarding this. Recently, the Union Education Minister and the Minister of State for Education had warned that if the State did not take a decision, the Union government would be forced to take stern action. “Since the State did not want to lose out on the funds, it signed on the PM SHRI agreement,” the Minister said.
The Minister did not provide a clear response on why the government failed to take the CPI into confidence about inking the MoU.
