Staff back new disciplinary rules at Sanskrit varsity

Kerala

The teaching and non-teaching staff have supported the disciplinary rules imposed on the main campus of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, near here, as the varsity authorities said on Friday (July 4, 2025) that there was no going back on the decisions taken to ensure a semblance of order and the safety of students.

Vice-Chancellor K.K. Geethakumary and K.S. Arunkumar, convenor of the Syndicate subcommittee that proposed restrictions on the entry of outsiders into the campus and hostels, held discussions with the staff to apprise them of the need to ensure discipline on the campus and in hostels. The meeting was held amid protests by the Students Federation of India against the rules.

The practical suggestions made by staff regarding the implemented rules would be taken into consideration. However, there would be no compromise on the need to uphold the institution’s image and transform it into a centre of excellence in higher education, they were quoted as saying in a release issued here.

The teachers have urged the varsity Syndicate to hold discussions with the students agitating against the new curbs, while stressing that the restrictions should not hinder the individual and academic freedom enjoyed by students and researchers. The varsity should take steps to make the campus drug-free and impose curbs on the entry of outsiders, they said.

However, such restrictions should not be viewed as an imposition of excessive power. Student organisations have pointed out anomalies in the order issued as part of implementing the disciplinary rules. There should be no curbs on access to academic facilities and organisational rights on the campus, teachers said in a communication.
