Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings continue to inspire generations: Kerala Governor

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Sunday hailed Sree Narayana Guru as a true social reformer whose messages of unity, equality, and compassion continue to inspire generations.

Addressing a gathering during the Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi celebrations at Sivagiri, the Governor said that Narayana Guru’s ideals should be reflected in the lives of every individual.

He pointed out that Narayana Guru’s unique role in society was that he expected nothing from the world, but gave everything to the society. Besides, Guru’s vision was not about establishing a new religion but renewing eternal truths.

“His message was simple yet profoundly deep: ‘One caste, one religion, one mankind, one world,’” he said.

The Governor further elaborated that for Sree Narayana Guru, ‘dharma’ was not just a matter of rituals or customs, but a way of life, centred on right conduct that encompasses one’s duty toward parents, society, nature and all fellow beings. “Religions may differ, but ‘dharma’ unites us all,” he said.

He also acknowledged Guru’s pioneering role as a social reformer who fought against injustices, superstition and discrimination. “His compassion was not confined to human beings; animals, trees, rivers, and nature as a whole were part of his boundless kindness. His vision was of an inclusive, tolerant, and compassionate society,” the Governor said.

Mr. Arlekar also reiterated the Guru’s foundational principle of coexistence, stating, “Live and let live.”

The Governor emphasised that Narayana Guru’s teachings transcended geographical and cultural boundaries. “My culture, your culture, our traditions, our beliefs. All can coexist with mutual respect. Such tolerance and acceptance are the foundations of our democracy and the essence of India’s civilisation,” he said.
