The southwest monsoon set in over Kerala on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief from heat for the residents. However, moderate wind prevailing in Thiruvananthapuram district ahead of the arrival of the monsoon turned into strong gusts of wind, uprooting trees and toppling billboards and hoardings on Friday night and Saturday morning. Heavy rain lashed many parts of the district leading to flooding in low-lying areas.
Frequent power outages were also witnessed due to strong winds that uprooted trees across key main roads, including in front of the Raj Bhavan in Vellayambalam. A huge tree in front of the Press Club and a large tree near Fort Hospital fell.
The roof of a part of the Green Field Stadium collapsed in the wind, while the roof of the house of Perumpazhuthoor native Sunil Kumar was completely destroyed after a tree fell on his house in Neyyattinkara. Jayan, a native of Perumpazhuthoor, also sustained heavy crop loss after 100 banana crops fell in the wind. There has been extensive damage to crops in Andoorkonam panchayat and other regions in the capital district. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (May 25, 2025) warning of very heavy rains.
