Smart mobility project BUSZ set to transform public transport in Kozhikode

In a major stride towards transforming public transportation through smart communication systems for commuters, an advanced mobility solution named BUSZ is set to be introduced for bus operators in Kozhikode district. Currently in its implementation phase with the support of selected operators, the project offers a comprehensive suite of digital tools, including real-time bus tracking, a commuter-friendly mobile app, smart passenger information displays, and automated onboard announcement systems.

The first round of discussions held recently with functionaries of the bus operators’ association yielded promising results, with the majority expressing support for the IT initiative. Encouraged by this positive response from key stakeholders, the project is now being prepared for submission to district-level authorities for final approval and rollout. It has already completed a two-year trial run covering Kunnamangalam, Mukkam, Thamarassery, and Thiruvambadi.

A key attraction of the GPS-enabled smart initiative, developed by Mukkom-based Busz Transit Solutions, is that it will be offered free of cost to bus operators. Revenue generated from permitted ad displays will be used to meet installation and maintenance costs for this public service. The suite of digital tools will also support bus time announcement systems at major bus stands and facilitate the display of emergency public alerts and news updates.

“Using advanced GPS technology, the system can provide live tracking of buses, accurate arrival predictions, and stop-wise information, ensuring passengers are always informed while operators manage fleets more efficiently. This is a technology implemented in several foreign countries,” says M. Anvar, a young software developer and Chief Executive Officer of Busz Transit Solutions. He adds that the app, to be made available to all commuters, will allow users to plan their journeys, track buses in real-time, locate nearby stops, and receive instant updates — all from the convenience of their smartphones. 

Smart screens to be installed both at bus stations and onboard vehicles will ensure the prompt display of transportation details. Preparations are also under way to install them in all KSRTC depots. The displays will be multilingual and customisable. To assist passengers, especially the elderly and visually impaired, buses will be equipped with automated audio-visual announcements triggered by GPS, reducing dependence on drivers and enhancing the travel experience. The app is already available for download on the Google Play Store.

“The vision is to create a collaborative initiative with the support of public transport operators, technology providers, and local administrators to make urban mobility smarter, safer, and more reliable. The project is expected to secure clearance from district-level authorities soon,” says Manoj Babu, a retired Traffic Police officer now associated with the initiative. He adds that the project offers an ideal solution for both commuters and bus operators to experience the benefits of tech-integrated smart transportation.
