Six Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] workers were sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and slapped with a fine of ₹80,000 each by the Thalassery Additional Sessions Court for the brutal assault on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker and his family 17 years ago.
Judge Ruby K. Jose found them guilty of criminal trespass and causing grievous injuries to Kodiyeri Kuttivayal Ramdas, his wife Usha, and their son Shikhil. They were assaulted inside their home on the night of December 15, 2007.
The convicted persons are Ranjith, V.R. Arun Das, 38, Sagith, 37, Surjith, 37, Akhilesh, 44, and Peringalath Linesh, 42. The second accused in the case, Sajeevan, passed away during the course of the trial.
Ramdas, Usha, and Shikhil sustained severe injuries in the attack and were admitted for long-term treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
Additional Public Prosecutor K. Rupesh and P. Premarajan appeared for the prosecution. The court observed that the offence was grave and deliberate, and that the assault on a family within the sanctity of their home merited stern punishment.
