Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby on Sunday said the party had decided that in order to nurture a new generation some leaders should step down from their positions.

Presenting the V.S. Achuthanandan Kerala Award, instituted by Karshaka Thozhilali, the official magazine of the CPI(M)‘s affiliate organisation Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU), to senior CPI(M) leader S. Ramachandran Pillai at Mankombu in Kuttanad on Sunday, Mr. Baby said that accordingly, many senior leaders had vacated their posts.

“However, this does not mean that these leaders are ending their political involvement. They continue to work within the party. The best example of this is Ramachandran Pillai. Though he stepped down from the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, he still actively participates in the party’s State committee meetings, central committee meetings, and other party activities,” Mr. Baby said.

The CPI(M) general secretary said that India was facing major challenges and that the BJP-led Union government was taking the country down a dangerous path.
