Elaborate arrangements have been made for a mega excursion of senior citizens from Malappuram municipal limits to Wayanad on Tuesday (October 7). Malappuram Municipality is hosting the picnic, expected to draw over 3,000 elderly people, and potentially setting a record for the largest senior citizen outing organised by a local civic body.

The municipality has arranged 80 buses for the Wayanad journey. The buses will start their historic journey from Kottakkunnu around 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday, carrying the senior citizens from the 40 wards of Malappuram Municipality. Prominent personalities, including MLAs and district administration officials, will be seeing off the buses.

“This is not just a trip for the elderly people of Malappuram. It is a gesture of love and gratitude. They are our pillars, and they contributed immensely in their prime. We are showing them that we are always here for them,” said Municipal Chairperson Mujeeb Kaderi and Welfare Standing Committee Chairperson Mariyumma Shareef Konothodi.

The excursion will cover destinations like Pookode Lake and Karapuzha Dam in Wayanad. Special arrangements have been made at Thamarassery pass to prevent traffic snarls along the Ghat road. Two auditoriums have been arranged near Areekode for serving breakfast and dinner.

Lunch will be arranged at an auditorium at Muttil, Wayanad. The excursion is arranged in such a way as to return to Malappuram by 10 p.m. The municipality will cover all tour expenses. It will gift participants umbrellas, dhohar, towels, and other presents.

A medical team with a doctor for each village will join the trip in three ambulances. Spare buses will be stationed at Thamarassery and Kalpetta in case of breakdowns. The ₹40 lakh budget will be covered by the municipality’s own funds and sponsorships.
