A 22-year-old scooter rider died and his mother was critically injured after a private bus hit their vehicle on MG Road, Thrissur, Kerala, on Thursday morning. The accident occurred when the scooter rider tried to swerve to avoid a pothole.
The deceased, Vishnudath, a resident of Udaya Nagar near Punkunnam, was travelling with his mother Padmini. They were on their way to Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple. Padmini was admitted to Thrissur Medical College Hospital with serious injuries.
Soon after the incident, Opposition councillors blocked traffic on MG Road, alleging that the civic body failed to carry out essential road maintenance before the onset of monsoon.
Opposition leader Rajan K. Pallan said repeated warnings about the road condition were ignored. “We flagged this issue multiple times, but it was dismissed. Now a young life is lost. While people struggle on these damaged roads, the Mayor and Secretary are away on a trip to Goa,” he said.
The protest disrupted traffic for several kilometres in the city. The police later intervened, removed the protesters, and restored traffic.
