Schools in Kerala and Mizoram will remain closed as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues warnings of extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several states for the next few days.
Amid the early onset of monsoon across the country, IMD has sounded the red alert in several districts across Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Kerala. In light of this, authorities in Kerala and Mizoram declared that schools will remain closed on Thursday.
In Kerala, the agency has issued red alerts in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, while the rest of the states remain under orange alert.
District administrations across the state have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in several districts on May 30. These include Kasaragod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Idukki, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Palakkad and Alappuzha.
Schools in Aizawl will remain closed for the second consecutive day. A notification issued by Aizawl deputy commissioner and district disaster management authority chairman Er. Lalhriatpuia read, “Due to heavy inundation of rainfall in the past several hours in Aizawl district, all schools within Aizawl district have been instructed to declare holiday on Friday.”
Last week, Bangalore witnessed the one of its worst pre-monsoon showers with 130 mm rainfall, bringing the city to a standstill. Two days after Kerala reported early monsoons, leading to school closures, the Mumbai recorded also reported an early arrival of the southwest monsoons with some districts receiving over 200 mm rainfall.
