Samsung, on Tuesday, May 3, announced that it is working on an Ultra version of the Galaxy Z Fold. The teaser did not provide insight into the phone’s hardware, but it did mention that the upcoming device will offer “seamless AI integration optimized for the foldable format.”
For the past six years, Samsung has had a fairly clear strategy regarding foldable phones. Every year, the South Korean phone maker launches a book-style Galaxy Z Fold alongside a clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip. And while previous rumours hinted that Samsung was working on a budget-friendly Galaxy Z Flip, it looks like the lineup could now be joined by an “Ultra” variant.
But in a new post on X, Max Jambor, a fairly reliable tipster who has correctly predicted several upcoming phones in the past, says that “there’s no Ultra model, at least not this summer.” He goes on to say that instead of a foldable Ultra phone, Samsung will bring the “Ultra” experience to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 itself.
This means that we might see an upgraded camera setup, a new chipset, most likely the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Galaxy AI designed for the book-style foldable form factor. On the camera front, like last year’s Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which was Samsung’s first foldable with a 200MP camera, we might see the company giving the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the same treatment.
Samsung has also dropped some hints in the press release itself. The phrases “all without weighing you down” and “a smaller and more portable form factor” might mean that Samsung might make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 thinner and lighter than its predecessor. Also, it looks like the Ultra foldable will have some new animations which will trigger when you unfold the device.
With just over a month left for Samsung’s summer Galaxy Unpacked event, we won’t have to wait long to know if the phone maker is adding a new foldable to its lineup or simply giving the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the “Ultra” treatment.
