The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Ernakulam, has initiated steps to charge compensation from two youths who were arrested for allegedly throwing stones targeting the Kannur Executive Express on August 30. The force has invoked relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the case registered against Saneesh P.K. and Lijin N. from Alappuzha district, seeking compensation for the damage caused by the offence allegedly committed by them.

The two were apprehended by the RPF Crime Prevention and Detection Squad recently on two separate occasions.

“A case has been filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam, seeking suitable compensation from the accused under the BNSS for damaging railway property, besides initiating criminal prosecution under the Railways Act. The Indian Railways views such acts of vandalism with utmost seriousness, as they pose a grave threat to the safety of passengers, railway personnel, and train operations,” the Southern Railway said in a press release on Thursday.

“Sections including 395 of the BNSS, which deals with compensation to a victim, have been invoked in the case. Compensation is being sought from the accused as a step to deter miscreants from committing such crime in future,” Ernakulam South RPF Inspector Binoy Antony said.

The alleged incident took place when the train was passing near Veluthulli gate close to Aroor railway station on August 30. “A stone thrown from the tracks struck the lookout glass in front of the Loco pilot and damaged it. Fortunately, the loco pilot escaped without injury, averting a potentially life-threatening and alarming situation not only for the locopilot but also for many passengers of the train,” the railway release, issued by M. Senthamil Selvan, chief public relations officer, said.
