The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the city Corporation to evict encroachers on either side of the Karamana-Poojappura road in the city within three months.
Commission chairperson Alexander Thomas was acting on a complaint that either side of the Karamana-Poojappura was being encroached on for unauthorised commercial activity.
The commission observed that encroachments on roads in the city Corporation limits that posed a hurdle to pedestrians and vehicles should be removed.
The commission also directed the Public Works department (PWD) executive engineer to remove encroachments on the PWD road.
Prior to that, complainants and those accused of encroachments will be heard. Site inspections should also be held.
The Corporation secretary had informed the commission that encroachments were rampant on either side of the road from Poojappura to Kunjalamoodu. Notice had been issued to 17 establishments to remove encroachments and ensure smooth traffic flow.
However, the complainants alleged that the owners of the establishments paid scant notice to the city Corporation’s notice and footpaths and roads were all being encroached on.
