A remand prisoner accused of murdering his wife has been found dead reportedly with his throat slit inside the Kannur Central Jail in Kerala. The Kannur town police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.
The deceased, identified as Jilson of Kenichira in Wayanad, had been in remand for seven months in connection with the murder of his wife. He reportedly used a knife taken from the prison kitchen late on Monday night to slit his throat.
Fellow inmates who saw bloodstains on Tuesday morning alerted prison authorities, who rushed him to the district hospital. He was said to be alive when taken to the facility, but succumbed soon after.
A Kerala Water Authority employee, Jilson had earlier allegedly attempted suicide after killing his wife, reportedly due to mounting debt. Jail officials had arranged counselling as he reportedly continued to display suicidal tendencies while in custody.
Security lapse allegations
The incident has triggered allegations of a serious security lapse within the prison.
The Kannur town police have conducted an inquest and shifted the body to a mortuary. An investigation is under way.
