The alleged murder of a three-year-old girl took an unexpected turn after the Ernakulam Rural police reportedly took into custody a person on charge of sexually abusing the child.

According to police sources, the man in custody was a relative of the child’s father. The development comes at a time when the police are trying to zero in on the possible motive for the alleged murder of the child by her mother.

The police are set to move an application for the custody of the mother, the key accused in the alleged murder of the girl, before a trial court here.

The police are likely to get the custody of the accused on Thursday. The custody is considered crucial to detecting the motive behind the alleged murder. The mother was arrested and charged with murder after the body of her daughter was fished out of a river in the early hours of Tuesday.

“We recorded the statements of the family members of the accused and her relatives on Wednesday. The motive behind the murder can be identified only during the custodial interrogation of the accused,” said police sources. The mother allegedly threw her child into the river, and the post-mortem report indicated that the girl had drowned.
