Polling station-wise special drives can be considered for ensuring 100% enumeration in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State, Chief Electoral Officer (Kerala) Rathan U. Kelkar said on Saturday.
Mr. Kelkar was responding to a suggestion by M.K. Rahman of the Congress that election officials should consider organising special drives at a weekly review meeting of political parties on SIR. Mr. Kelkar said that such drives can be considered for people who have not received the enumeration forms or have failed to return them on time.
Addressing the political party representatives, Mr. Kelkar said the distribution of enumeration forms were lagging slightly in the urban areas. The distribution will be stepped up with help from the residents’ associations and booth-level agents (BLA) of the political parties, he said.
Later, Mr. Kelkar’s office said in a statement that booth-level officers (BLO) have been issued strict directions that the data on distributed enumeration forms should be updated only after ensuring that the forms are actually distributed to voters. Political parties had drawn his attention to reports that BLOs in certain areas were being instructed to show 100% distribution even if they had not distributed the forms.
Mr. Kelkar said Deputy Collectors (Election) and Electoral Registration Officers have informed him that they have not come across such an issue.
