PM Internship Scheme: According to the data shared by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of internship offers in Round 1 of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) pilot project, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

In Round 1, Uttar Pradesh received 8,875 offers, Andhra Pradesh 4,687 offers, and Madhya Pradesh 4,917 offers. The ranking shifts in Round 2, where Andhra Pradesh took the lead with 9,067 offers, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 7,397 offers, while Uttar Pradesh received 5,992 offers.

The official data shows a clear regional variation in offer numbers across both rounds of the PMIS pilot. While some states saw consistent performance, others experienced a surge in the second round.

Uttar Pradesh retained its top position in Round 1 but slipped to third place in Round 2. Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh emerged as strong performers in both phases, with Andhra Pradesh showing the largest jump between rounds.

Ministry data shows low joining rate despite high number of offers

Earlier, the Finance Ministry had shared figures showing that although 33% of offers under PMIS were accepted, only 6% of candidates ultimately joined the companies. This gap between offer acceptance and actual joining points to a challenge in converting opportunities into real placements.

The PM internship scheme was announced in the 2024-25 Union Budget with the aim of providing internship opportunities to one crore youth in the top 500 companies over five years. The pilot project, launched on October 3, 2024, and targeted 1.25 lakh internships within a year.

In Round 1, partner companies posted more than 1.27 lakh opportunities and received over 6.21 lakh applications from around 1.81 lakh candidates. Round 2, launched on January 9, 2025, saw participation from 327 companies collectively offering more than 1.18 lakh internships.

Which are the companies making the highest number of offers?

The PMIS pilot project, at the time of its announcement, envisioned participation from the country’s top 500 companies to provide internship opportunities to eligible candidates. According to the data shared by the Ministry in the Rajya Sabha, PMIS Round 1 saw participation from 256 companies, offering 60,866 internships. While in Round 2, a total of 266 companies with a total of 67,836 offers were recorded.

Further, the Ministry, in its response to the query on Bihar-specific initiatives, said that overall it is working with state governments, central ministries, and industry associations to expand the scheme. In reference to Bihar, the MCA has collaborated with the state government to conduct workshops, seminars, and promotional campaigns, both online and offline.

Awareness drives have been held at ITIs, diploma institutes, degree, and graduate colleges. The nodal department is also actively monitoring the pilot project’s implementation to improve participation rates.
