Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday announced an ex gratia of ₹30 lakh to the bereaved family of Ram Narayan Bhagale, a Dalit migrant worker from Chhattisgarh who was mob lynched after being tried publicly as an “illegal immigrant and thief” from Bangladesh at Wayalar in Palakkad last week.

Mr. Vijayan said a gang of “xenophobic criminals inspired by schismatic hate ideology” murdered the hapless odd-jobs-man who had arrived in Kerala seeking work to support his two children, wife and mother.

He said the government would deposit ₹10 lakh each in the children’s names as a secure financial investment, with the interest supporting the family until the minors reached adulthood.
