On Android, Google has been slowly phasing out Assistant in favour of its AI-powered chatbot, Gemini. However, some phonemakers like Motorola and Samsung may be planning to add Perplexity as the default digital assistant.
According to a new report by Bloomberg, Perplexity AI has already reached an agreement with Lenovo Group Ltd’s Motorola to replace Gemini with its own AI chatbot as the default digital assistant. Citing people with knowledge of the matter, the report hints that Motorola may discuss the partnership at an upcoming product event in New York City on April 24.
Reportedly, Motorola’s deal with Perplexity might pitch Perplexity as a preloaded alternative to Gemini as well as offer a personalised user interface for the company’s new Razr phones.
And while the details about the deal with Samsung is still being worked on, Bloomberg said that the terms might let Samsung ship phones with Perplexity as the default digital assistant or preload them or ship phones with the app pre-installed. Also, there’s a possibility that Samsung might promote Perplexity on the Galaxy Store.
Samsung’s collaboration with Perplexity could potentially conflict with its existing agreement with Google, which currently powers several Galaxy AI features. However, the South Korean phone maker has been investing in Perplexity for a while now, with NEXT, the company’s investment arm backing up the startup last year.
Bloomberg also reported that Samsung is considering making some more investment in Perplexity in the near future, claiming that the new round of funding would double its valuation to $18 billion. Last month, the publication noted that the AI startup raised anywhere between $500 million to $1 billion.
Founded in 2022, Perplexity is an AI powered chatbot that gained popularity because it could look up for information in real-time and had a search-engine like interface. In addition to its own AI model, Perplexity can also use AI models from the likes of Google and OpenAI. Perplexity is also working on a Google Circle to Search like feature for Android devices.
