Residents of Kuppam in Taliparamba blocking the road on Wednesday after rainwater enters their houses near National Highway 66.

Tension prevailed at Kuppam in Taliparamba on Wednesday after rainwater entered houses near National Highway 66 triggering protests by local people.

Alleging that soil erosion from highway construction was affecting their homes, local people, including women, blocked the national highway demanding urgent intervention from authorities.

The protest intensified after soil from the under-construction stretch reportedly entered residential areas. In the absence of a water drain, water gushed through the heights into the residential area.

“Muddy water entered over 10 houses here. Local people are living in fear as they feel unsafe inside houses,” said a protesting resident.

Protesters demanded that the District Collector visit the site and said they would block vehicle movement until officials responded.

There was a brief altercation between the police and the protesters before the roadblock was lifted following the Collector’s assurance that he would visit the site.
