The Parappa block panchayat in Kasaragod district has become the first aspirational block in the country to receive approval from NITI Aayog for its brain health initiative, a scheme currently available in only 12 aspirational districts nationwide.
Under the programme, follow-up treatment and therapies will be provided for Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dementia, and other brain-related disorders. While the district submitted a project worth ₹1 crore, NITI Aayog has sanctioned ₹19 lakh for the first phase.
In the next stage, training will be provided to medical officers, Health department staff, and therapists, followed by the opening of an outpatient department. The initiative aims to improve the quality of life for patients with neurological disorders through therapies. Kasaragod, included in the aspirational block scheme, secured the project following a special request from the District Collector.
