Several educational institutions in districts along the national border in Jammu, Punjab and Rajasthan remained closed on Wednesday in the wake of tensions following India’s strikes at nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under ‘Operation Sindoor’.

In Jammu division, officials notified that institutes in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch districts remained closed. “In view of the prevailing situation, all schools, colleges and educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch will remain closed today,” Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said on X earlier in the day.

Authorities also ordered the closure of educational institutions in the border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara in Kashmir. Institutions in Bandipora district’s Gurez also remained closed.

The Kashmir University postponed all examinations scheduled for the day. Fresh dates for these examinations will be notified separately, a university spokesperson said. Cluster University also postponed all examinations scheduled for the day.

Some schools around the Srinagar airport were also closed as a precautionary measure, officials said.

Festive offer

In Punjab, all schools in the border districts of Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, and Gurdaspur were shut on Wednesday, and officials said that in Pathankot, schools will remain closed for the next 72 hours.

In Rajasthan, schools were closed in the four border districts of Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer as a precaution.

In response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the Indian Armed Forces carried out Operation Sindoor early on Wednesday, conducting missile strikes at nine sites, including the bases of Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Official sources said that at least 10 civilians were killed and 40 were injured, mostly in Jammu’s Poonch sector, as Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling across the Line of Control in response to Operation Sindoor. A large number of houses were damaged or caught fire in the cross-border shelling, forcing hundreds of residents to flee to safer areas.
