The Peroorkada police on Wednesday arrested a man for allegedly defrauding several students by falsely promising college admissions in exchange for large sums of money.

The police identified the accused as Jinto Joy, 33, of Kodakara, Thrissur. He has been accused of duping higher education aspirants in the name of an educational consultancy after guaranteeing them admissions at various colleges. He also allegedly collected large sums from educational institutions after assuring them to establish accredited robotics and automation laboratories.

While a preliminary probe estimated that the accused obtained at least ₹12 lakh from several people, investigators suspected there could be more victims in the suspected racket. More complaints have emerged against him in other places, including Thrissur, the police said.

Besides, the management of Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College and Hospital, Karakonam, has also submitted a formal complaint to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Neyyattinkara, against the accused for purportedly deceiving students by promising admissions to the institution.

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody, the police said.
