If you have been wondering what to do with your old clothes, look no further. You can upskill yourself, learn the basics of stitching and designing, and create something entirely new from them. Or, better still, sell these “preloved” items at a premium price.
Mithrakulam Charitable Trust in Ernakulam has come up with a training programme. “We need groups of at least 10 people for the programme. We will train them at their place on designing and creating unique products out of old clothes,” says Anil Jose, managing trustee of the trust. A fee will be levied for the programme. The team will also help market the products develop by the group.
If the clothes cannot be upcycled, they will be transformed into other utilitarian items, including bags, pouches, mats, aprons, bed covers, sofa covers, mobile holders, and even clothing for animals.
The trust has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Social Work at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, to set up a drop box where students can donate their old clothes. In the second phase, upcycling classes will be organised for interested students.
