Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that the government was not considering extending the Kochi metro to more areas, even as works on phase-2 of the project were progressing. He was responding to a calling attention motion moved by Kunnathunad MLA P.V. Sreenijin in the Assembly.
On the proposed metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, assigned to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) for implementation, the Chief Minister said detailed project reports (DPR) had to be prepared based on the revised National Metro Rail Policy of 2017.
“The government is considering a comprehensive mobility plan and the alternative analysis report submitted by KMRL. After they are approved, further steps can be taken upon completion of the DPR with permission from the Central government,” he said.
The construction of an overbridge at Sreekaryam had begun as part of preliminary works for the Thiruvananthapuram metro project, the Chief Minister said. “A secretary-level committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been entrusted with the task of fixing the alignment, which is most beneficial to the people after examining various proposals submitted by KMRL,” Mr. Vijayan said.
