With the arrest of Deva, 20, son of Ramaiah of Sudanthirapuram in Pudukottai district, the mystery behind the death of a 28-year-old woman in a cashew farm in Sivaganga district two days ago, was solved on Tuesday.
The Saakottai police registered a case of woman missing following a complaint from the woman’s mother. Meanwhile, relatives said that they had found the woman in a cashew farm.
The Ramanathapuram Range DIG of Police M. N. Mylvaganan, SP Senthil Kumar formed special teams. Discreet probe by DSP Vinoji and team with some suspects and from the CCTV footage zeroed in on Deva.
The police found that he had taken the woman to the cashew farm and raped her. When she screamed, he allegedly smothered her. When she turned unconscious, he left the scene of crime.
A senior officer said the accused visited the spot after about an hour and found her dead. He did not flee but chose to remain in the village as he felt that it would be safe but he was caught.
The woman, who was mentally unstable, had left home in the noon to a nearby temple to take part in annadhanam. On return to her home, the accused forcefully took her to the cashew farm and committed the crime. The Saakottai police have detained the accused. Further investigation is on.
