Munambam residents demand framing of Waqf rules

The Munambam Land Protection Council, a collective of residents of Munambam, urged the Union government to frame the rules for the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, as the Supreme Court has not stayed Section 2 (a) of the legislation.

The Section states that the Waqf amended Act does not apply to trusts established by a Muslim for purposes similar to a Waqf. The council had been arguing that the Munambam land fell within the ambit of the Section, and hence, the Munambam land deal could not be considered as a Waqf.

If the Union government fails to frame the rules for the Act by giving the benefit of Section 2 (a) to the Munambam land, one should understand that the amendments could not solve the issue, said Benny Joseph, convener of the council.

The BJP leaders had been campaigning that the Union government could not go in for the rules as the CPI(M) and the Indian Union Muslim League had challenged the amendments in the Supreme Court. Now that the court has not stayed the provision, the Union government shall form the rules to help the Munambam residents, he demanded.

Meanwhile, the protest of the residents entered its 338th day on Monday.
