Amidst cries of ‘kanne karale V.S.’ by party workers, the mortal remains of former Chief Minister and CPI (M) leader V.S. Achuthanandan entered his home district, Alappuzha, in the early hours of Wednesday (July 23, 2025).
The cortege entered the district at Oachira, where district administration officials received the body. By the time Achuthanandan’s body reached the district for the last time, it was around 7 a.m., 17 hours after the funeral procession began in Thiruvananthapuram.

Despite the nightfall, hundreds waited along the roadsides to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader and pay their respects. The procession will pass through Kareelakulangara, Nagiarkulangara, Haripad, Thottappally and T.D. Medical College junction before reaching his home, Velikkakathu, at Paravur in Punnapra North grama panchayat.
Hundreds of people have already thronged his residence to pay their respects. The body will be kept there before being taken to CPI (M) district committee office. It will then be moved to Recreation Ground around 11 a.m., where his mortal remains will be kept for public viewing until 3 p.m.

The funeral of Achuthanandan will be held with full State honours at Punnapra-Vayalar Martyrs’ Memorial at Valiya Chudukkad at 3 p.m. He will be laid to rest close to the final resting places of legendary communist figures, including P. Krishna Pillai, T.V. Thomas, N. Sreedharan, P.K. Chandranandan, and K.R. Gouri.
The Alappuzha district administration has declared a holiday for all government offices and schools, including professional colleges in the district, on Wednesday (July 23, 2025).
