On Tuesday, Meta unveiled its first standalone AI assistant app, called Meta AI, marking a significant step in the company’s AI strategy. Launched during the inaugural LlamaCon developer conference, the app is powered by Meta’s latest large language model (LLM), Llama 4, and is designed to offer a more personalised and social AI experience. The Meta AI app is available for free via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for Android and iOS devices.
Users need an account to access various features on the Meta AI app, with an option to quickly create one using an Instagram account. As of now, unlike ChatGPT or Perplexity, there is no subscription model for the Meta AI app.
Unlike previous integrations of Meta AI within WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, this standalone app offers a dedicated platform for AI interactions. The app supports text and voice conversations, image generation, and web search capabilities.
Users can also pair their Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses with the Meta AI app. The app includes a Discover tab that features various user-generated images and animations, functioning similar to Instagram but focused solely on popular AI-generated content.
The app also has a history tab, which showcases all previous user searches. These generative searches can be revisited at any time.
Meta AI leverages user data from Facebook and Instagram to deliver personalised responses, remembering preferences and context to enhance interactions. The app also introduces a full-duplex voice mode for more natural, conversational engagement, though this feature is currently limited to select regions.
The launch of the Meta AI app signifies Meta’s commitment to advancing AI technologies and providing users with more integrated and personalised digital experiences. As the company continues to develop its AI offerings, users can expect further enhancements and features aimed at making AI interactions more seamless and intuitive.
