A master plan for the development of the town is among the priorities of Reetha Paul, the newly elected chairperson of Angamaly municipality, though her immediate focus will be to complete the ongoing development works. The Congress leader, who was elevated to the chairperson’s chamber after winning sixth term as a councillor, also said that steps for the beautification of the town will be initiated without delay.
Renovation of the Angamaly market and rectification and maintenance of canals in the local body are also among Ms. Paul’s priorities.
“A master plan on town planning has to be finalised. The lack of a modernised slaughterhouse in the town is a major concern. It will require at least ₹10 crore to build one with all necessary facilities, as per rough estimates. The project requires funding from the government,” she said. She exuded hope that the works on the market could be completed with the local body’s own funds.
The chairperson said efforts to get established ownership rights over 52 cents belonging to the municipality in the town would continue. Once the local body gets the land parcel, steps to construct a municipal town hall there would be initiated, she added.
She said waste management in the municipality has been going on well with biodegradable waste being processed at the source and the Haritha Karma Sena collecting non-biodegradable waste, including plastic. “We have the provision to distribute bio compost bins for around 1,000 families too. If there are households still requiring the bins, we can distribute them. Steps will also be taken to expand the non-biodegradable waste collection facility,” she added. Ms. Paul said more CCTV cameras would be installed in required spots to improve public safety measures. She said other plans would be formulated and finalised as per the requirements of each ward.
Ms. Paul, who represents the Mullassery ward, will be the chairperson for the first two years. She has to vacate the chamber for Independent councillor Luxy Joy for the next two years, as per a power-sharing agreement. The Congress will decide the chairperson for the remaining year. While Wilson Mundadan will be the deputy chairperson for the first three years, another Independent councillor Varghese Vempliath has been promised the post for the remaining two years.
