While the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have released partial lists of candidates for various divisions in the Kozhikode Corporation ahead of the forthcoming local body polls, the absence of familiar faces in both fronts is notable. The BJP has fielded two sitting councillors and one former councillor, while most of its remaining candidates are newcomers. The list of 22 candidates announced by the Congress is entirely made up of fresh faces.
“The party has gone to great lengths to provide opportunities to newcomers,” said K.C. Shobhita, the UDF council party leader in the Corporation. A three-time councillor, she has also been shortlisted for the remaining list of 27 candidates.
The CPI(M) is expected to publish the list of candidates on Wednesday (November 12). Sources say the list would contain a majority of freshers. “I have been a councillor for five terms. I think it is time for me to step aside,” said P. Divakaran, CPI(M) councillor and welfare standing committee chairman at the Corporation.
