The man accused of driving a car over the feet of a sub-inspector and speeding away, reportedly to avoid a police vehicle checking team at Kadalikkad near Muvattupuzha on June 14, 2025, surrendered before the Muvattupuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate Court I on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) afternoon.
The accused was identified as Muhammad Shareef, originally from Vazhathope in Idukki, but currently living in a rented house at Anikkad near Muvattupuzha. He had been absconding since the incident.
“He surrendered after realising that the police were closing in on him. We will move an application to take him into custody,” said sources in the Muvattupuzha police.
According to the police, he was an accused in multiple cases, including NDPS cases registered by both the police and the Excise department. The police suspect he was under the influence of drugs when the incident took place.
The Ernakulam Rural police have since arrested two persons — Shahid, 27, and Rafsal, 24, of Erattupetta — on the charge of abetting the accused in fleeing. Allegedly, they picked up the accused in a car after he called them.
The injured officer, E.M. Muhammed, a sub-inspector attached to the Kalloorkad police station, has undergone surgery for a fractured foot. The incident occurred when the police team signalled the car to stop, and the driver, reportedly attempting to evade the check, accelerated and drove over the officer’s feet, causing him to collapse.
The police had registered a case for attempted murder and for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty.
