Make July 9 nationwide strike a success: State-level joint committee of trade unions

Kerala

The State-level joint committee of trade unions on Saturday appealed to the general public and workers in Kerala to make the proposed July 9 nationwide strike protesting the “anti-worker, anti-farmer” policies of the Union government a success.

The national-level strike is primarily a resistance towards the four labour codes introduced by the Centre and the privatisation of public property, Elamaram Kareem, State general secretary of the CITU and general convener of the State-level joint committee of trade unions, told a press conference here.

Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), United Trade Union Congress (UTUC) and the federations representing government employees are participating in the strike.

The labour codes, passed without adequate consultation, have weakened the labour rights of citizens and made them socially vulnerable, according to the trade unions. They also accused the government of pushing for complete privatisation of public sector institutions, including railways, coal, electricity, steel, and oil.

Union and State government employees, banks, postal department, insurance, telecom and other sectors are expected to be a part of the strike, according to the committee of trade unions. Hospitals, ambulances, media, milk supply and other emergency services have been exempted from the strike.
