The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will wrest power in a majority of local bodies in Ernakulam district, including the district panchayat, long considered a stronghold of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan has said.

Mr. Govindan was speaking after releasing the LDF manifesto for the Ernakulam district panchayat at the party’s district headquarters on Thursday (November 27, 2025). He said the LDF would retain control of the Kochi Corporation with a thumping majority this time.

“The LDF is facing the local body polls as a united force and is making significant strides across the State, while the UDF is plagued by internal problems. The LDF has the political and organisational machinery in place and is fully prepared to face the elections,” Mr. Govindan said.

The manifesto, titled Our District, Our Dream, proposes comprehensive development of the district based on a policy upheld by the LDF and rooted in foundational productive sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy, marine resources, and small and medium industries to generate more jobs. The district’s tourism potential would also be harnessed to further contribute to the State’s economy. Special interventions and additional investments would be made for the upliftment of backward areas and backward classes. The manifesto also promises protection for the elderly from backward classes, the differently-abled, those living alone, and members of the transgender community, while follow-up assistance would be extended to the extremely poor.

The manifesto has been divided into 16 sections, each outlining separate development projects for different sectors. Major areas identified include agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy development, fisheries and marine resources, irrigation and soil conservation, industry, labour and skill development, drinking water, health and sanitation, palliative care, social welfare, housing and protection of the elderly, education and culture, youth welfare and sports, tourism, transportation, development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, environment protection, and disaster mitigation.

Industries Minister P. Rajeeve and CPI(M) district secretary S. Satish were among those present.
