The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Kochi has sentenced Mohammed Azarudeen and Sheik Hidayatullah of Ukkadam, Coimbatore, for eight years of rigorous imprisonment in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu Islamic State (IS) recruitment case.
N. Seshadrinathan, the Special Judge, awarded the convicts rigorous imprisonment of eight year each on three counts. However, the punishment shall run concurrently, the court held on Monday (September 29, 2025).
The special court had found the two guilty of recruiting and propagating the ideology of the IS.
The two were found guilty of offences punishable under Sections 38, 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) read with Section 38 and 39 of UAPA Act.
Prosecution case
The prosecution case was that the convicts became active members of proscribed associations, namely IS/Daesh, which is a banned organisation. They got associated with IS, propagated the activities of IS, garnered support to IS and for that purpose, they formed a WhatsApp group, used social media platform, conducted secret classes to attract vulnerable youths to IS.
They downloaded voluminous posters, videos and links that were related to IS activities displaying violence, IS training, manufacture of bombs, killing of hostages and how to use social media secure without giving room to authorities to identify them and their acts. They also downloaded videos and speeches of Islamic radical leaders to achieve their goal, the prosecution contended.
