Kerala

Sajeesh Kumar, 45, the prime accused in the Vishwadeepthi Multi-State Agri Cooperative Society fraud case, was arrested by the Thrissur Rural police at the Karipur airport on Thursday.

He is the former chairman of the society and a resident of Payyanad in Malappuram. He has been remanded in custody.

The arrest is linked to the cheating of investors of crores of rupees through the Irinjalakuda branch of the Vishwadeepthi Multi-State Agri Cooperative Society, headquartered at Chanthakunnu, Irinjalakuda. The accused allegedly lured investors by promising high returns on fixed deposits. However, neither the interest was paid nor the principal was returned.

The society falsely claimed that it was functioning under the Government of India and promised that returns would be generated from profit-making farming activities on leased agricultural land.

Fifteen cases have been registered against Sajeesh Kumar at the Irinjalakuda police station alone. In all, 32 cases have been registered.

Jeevalatha, 39, the former manager of the society and a resident of Muttithadi, was arrested earlier.

On the instructions of District Police Chief B. Krishnakumar, the case was investigated by a team comprising Irinjalakuda Police Inspector Shajan M.S., sub-inspectors (SI) Prasannakumar K.P., Muhammed Rashi, ASI Shabu T.K., and Senior Civil Police Officer Abhilash C.M.
