Kerala rains: Orange alert in Kasaragod, holiday declared for educational institutions

In view of continuous heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas, District Collector K. Inbasekar has declared a holiday for all education institutions in Kasaragod district of Kerala on Tuesday (June 17, 2025).

The decision was taken prioritising public safety as water levels in rivers continue to rise and landslips have been reported along parts of the national highway.

The holiday applies to schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, madrasas, anganwadis and special classes across the district. Authorities cited increased travel disruptions and the heightened risk of accidents as key reason for the closure.

However, all previously scheduled examinations, including university, professional, departmental exams, will be conducted as planned without any change in timing.

Meaanwhile, the India Meterological Department (IMD) has declared an orange alert in Kasaragod for the next three hours (Tuesday morning).

Meanwhile, two separate tragic incidents struck the district, with a woman going missing after falling into a irrigation canal and young girl drowning in a waterbody near her home.

Bhavani (63), wife of Ganesh Nayak of Madhur Gangai road, Kelugude, went missing after accidently falling into a canal at Shankarakuzhi on Monday evening while walking. Fire and Rescue Service, along with local residents, launched a serach operation soon after the incident was reported. However, strong water currents hindered the efforts and Bhavani remained untraced till late Monday night. Authorities confirmed that the search would continue.

In the other incident, Fathima Hiba (8), daughter of Muhammad and Kadijat Kubra of Cheva in Badoor, died after falling into a rain filled stone quarry near her house around 6 p.m. on Monday. A Class 3 student, Hiba was last seen playing with friends before being found missing.
